Geographic information systems for aquaculture site selection: a review

Resumo: | The objective of this article is to present a review on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to the site selection for aquaculture. Publications between 1984 and 2015 were searched in the database of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Bibliographic meta-analysis method was used to evaluate publications according to thematic and methodological criteria. In 30 years there was a methodological development which remained restricted to universities and specialized research centers in biotechnology and aquaculture. The potential of GIS for aquaculture management had little operational progress, hardly being adopted by managers and decision makers. GIS spatial analysis techniques, criteria and factors are well documented and are likely to be applied operationally, but decision models still lack more detail on methods and cost / effectiveness evaluations. For the decision makers to adopt GIS operationally in aquaculture management it will take training and a closer relationship with researchers. |

As referências foram levantadas na base de dados da Organização das Nações Unidas para Alimentação e Agricultura (FAO) e abrangem o período entre 1984 e 2015. Através do método de meta-análise bibliográfica foram avaliadas as publicações de acordo com critérios temáticos e metodológicos. Em 30 anos houve uma evolução metodológica que se manteve restrita a universidades e centros de pesquisa especializados em geotecnologias e aquicultura. O potencial oferecido pelo SIG para gestão da atividade aquícola teve pouco avanço em termos operacionais, quase não sendo adotado pelos gestores e tomadores de decisão. As técnicas de análise em SIG e os critérios e fatores utilizados estão bem documentados e são passíveis de ser aplicados em termos operacionais, mas o processo de construção dos modelos de decisão ainda carece de mais detalhamento sobre os métodos e de avaliações de custo/benefício. Para que os SIGs sejam adotados operacionalmente na gestão da aquicultura é preciso capacitação e maior aproximação com a pesquisa.
