This study aims to elucidate how open innovation programs run by large companies influence the development of dynamic capabilities in startups that attended these programs. To achieve the goal, the research focused on the development of dynamic capabilities in startups because of the contact with maintaining companies. Specifically, it seeks to analyze how such capabilities flow between them during open innovation programs. The study will use the phenomenological qualitative approach, via multiple case studies, through in-depth interviews with executives of startups and maintaining companies that participated in an open innovation program in Brazil. Such executives will be selected from the database list of the largest Brazilian open innovation consultancies and via LinkedIn. To observe the commonalities of the phenomenon and avoid possible conflicts, were interviewed startups and large companies that participated in different corporate open innovation programs and who had no relationship with each other. Documental research was carried out for later triangulation with data collected in interviews to confirm the findings and demonstrate the phenomenon. As a theoretical contribution, the study intends to expand the understanding of the nature of the dynamic capabilities developed by startups in light of the specificities of open innovation. In terms of implications for practice, this study provided an understanding of the most beneficial moments for startups to participate in corporate open innovation programs, elucidating the role of open innovation in the transition of startups and their level of maturity.
