Resumo: Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a malformation of systemic origin that affects permanent incisors and molars, defined as a qualitative defect in the dental enamel, causing yellow and brown stains, which affect the permanent incisor and molars, causing coronary fractures, sensitivity and compromised esthetics. Authough it etiology has not yet been defined, there are many studies reporting on the process of amelogenesis and its influence on dental enamel malformation, wich can thus cause this problem. HMI is a major obstacle in dentistry because its etiology is not defined,  and it’s often treated as dental caries. The difficult of diagnosis makes the correct treatment for each patient difficult. The objective of this peper is to describe the HMI through a literature review, so that it can bring knowledge to dental surgeons, so that they can know how to diagnose and have the best conduct in relation to the treatment. For this, searches for articles were carried out in databases such as Pubmed and Google academic, and twenty one articles in Portuguese and English were selected. In view od the study carried out, it was observed that there are still no prevention strategies, due to its undefined cause and the treatmente of this enamel defect varies according to the severety of each lesion and patient profile and interests.
