The impact of COVID-19 on the music industry digital transformation

Resumo: This article analyzes the main impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the trajectory of digital transformation in the Music Industry. Before the pandemic, the Music Industry had recovered its revenues, due to the diffusion of business models based on streaming. Based on documentary research of articles collected between March 2020 and June 2021, we suggest that the digital transformation could take two different 'paths'. In one path, Digital Transformation in the industry is expected to increase the centrality of streaming services, accompanied by increased concentration in the industry. Another path includes the emergence of business models that promote greater direct interaction between musicians and audience, increasing innovation and decreasing concentration in the industry. We conclude the article with suggestions for contributions to the literature.

Antes da pandemia, a Indústria da Música mostrava recuperação de faturamento a partir da difusão de modelos de negócio baseados no streaming. Com base na pesquisa documental de artigos coletados entre março de 2020 e junho de 2021, sugerimos que a transformação digital poderá tomar dois ‘caminhos’ distintos. Em um caminho, espera-se que a transformação digital na indústria aumente a centralidade dos serviços de streaming, acompanhado de aumento na concentração na indústria. Um outro caminho inclui o surgimento de modelos de negócio que promovam maior interação direta entre músicos e fãs, aumentando a inovação e diminuindo a concentração na indústria.
