Motivations, risks, barriers and results of the adoption of Global Sourcing by Brazilian companies – A case-based study

Resumo: This article aims to identify the motivations to the adoption of Global Sourcing (GS), its risks and barriers and results that are being achieved by the companies from emerging countries companies. The research argues to identify what is distinguishing the experience from these companies and the theory already developed about GS based on companies from developed countries. A case-based study was made with the investigation of four companies from the electrical and electronics industry sector from South of Brazil. Data was collected through in-deep interviews, documents and direct observation. The main motivations are faster access to new technologies and the establishment of a presence in global markets. It was also identify that the opportunity to offer more diversified products using the same distribution channels already developed by the companies motivate the adoption of GS and this situation was not identified at previously literature. The absence of a broad local supply-base make the companies adopt GS beside its risks. Besides the difficulties faces by the companies, the barrier analysis process is not formalize. The main results are related with innovation and reductions in product development and time to market. The companies face a challenge to develop the required abilities to compete for the advantages that he global market can offer.

A pesquisa explora as características distintivas da experiência dessas empresas e examina as teorias estabelecidas sobre o GS com base em empresas dos países desenvolvidos. No artigo, um estudo de caso investigou quatro empresas da indústria eletroeletrônica no Sul do Brasil. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas em profundidade, documentos e observação direta. De acordo com a pesquisa, as principais motivações para adoção do GS são o acesso mais rápido às novas tecnologias e a ascensão dos mercados globais. Constatou-se também que a oportunidade de oferecer produtos diversificados, utilizando os canais de distribuição já desenvolvidos pelas empresas, motiva a adoção do GS, uma situação não identificada na literatura prévia. Apesar dos riscos, a ausência de uma ampla base de suprimento local exige que as empresas adotem o GS. Além disso, as falhas na formalização dos processos de análise de barreiras criam dificuldades para as empresas. Os principais resultados associados ao GS referem-se à inovação e à redução do tempo necessário para desenvolver produtos e atingir mercados.
