Management of public security organizations: an analysis of safety culture

This article aims to assess the maturity of the safety culture in a public security organization, the National Police Academy (ANP). A documentary survey was conducted, in addition to interviews with managers, and questionnaires were applied with a sample of 243 servers, employees and students of federal police professional training courses. The results show a low level of maturity of the culture of security regarding structure and organizational learning, as well as a high degree of maturity related to information, involvement, communication and commitment factors. The data indicate that there is no effective safety culture implanted in the ANP, since elements and factors were identified in early stages of maturity degree. And, according to the literature, one can only affirm that there is a concrete culture of safety in an organization when all its factors are evaluated in the higher stages of maturity degree.
