Excellence in science: a critical affirmative response

Resumo: Excellence in science is defined as a neutral process for the selection and recognition of worthy theories and researchers. This principle is based on the metricization of academic life through employing universal criteria that support fair play and equal opportunities. However, feminist theories have claimed that the organization of science based on excellence is never neutral or objective. Meritocracy reproduces inequality from social structures, particularly those related to gender stereotypes and barriers in researchers’ career evaluation, as well as research outcomes. In this paper, we propose that excellent knowledge is produced only through gender and science in the making.

Sin embargo, las teorías feministas han reclamado que la organización de la ciencia basada en la excelencia nunca es neutral ni objetiva. La meritocracia reproduce las desigualdades de todas las estructuras sociales, particularmente aquellas relacionadas con los estereotipos de género y las barreras en la evaluación de las carreras de investigación y los resultados de investigación. En este artículo, proponemos que la excelencia en el conocimiento es producido sólo cuándo el género y la ciencia se crean procesualmente.L’excellence en sciences se définit comme un processus neutre visant la sélection et la reconnaissance des théories et des recherches les plus importantes. Ce principe se base sur la mesure des résultats de la vie académique, à travers l’usage de critères universels soutenant le franc-jeu [le fair play] et l’égalité des chances. Cependant, les théories féministes ont objecté qu’une organisation basée sur l’excellence n’est jamais ni neutre, ni objective. La méritocratie reproduit les inégalités presentes dans toutes les structures sociales, particulièrement celles liées aux stéréotypes de genre, mais aussi aux barrières à l’évaluation des carrières dans la recherche et aux résultats de recherches. Cet article avance que l’excellence du savoir ne se produit que quand le genre et la science sont créés de manière procédurale.A excelência na ciência é definida como um processo neutro para a seleção e o reconhecimento das teorias e pesquisas mais valiosas. Este princípio está baseado na metrização da vida acadêmica através do uso de critérios universais que apoiam o jogo justo [fair play] e a igualdade de oportunidades. No entanto, as teorias feministas têm reclamado que a organização da ciência baseada na excelência nunca é neutra nem objetiva. A meritocracia reproduz as desigualdades de todas as estruturas sociais, particularmente daquelas relacionadas com os estereótipos de gênero e com as barreiras na avaliação de carreiras de pesquisa e nos resultados da pesquisa.
