The development of student assistance as a scientific field

Resumo: This paper aims to understand how student assistance is being established as a scientific field and a specific area of professional activity, and has developed from student support services. This is a qualitative study that includes a bibliographical survey, an analysis of legislation and field research involving 26 student assistance professionals from four federal universities in the Southeast region of Brazil. Based on the original concept of institutional culture, the article discusses whether student assistance is social assistance, and concludes that the debate around student assistance is not new and mobilizes different scientific capitals in a dispute over perspectives on what can be considered ideal student assistance.

El enfoque es cualitativo e incluye investigación bibliográfica, análisis de legislación e investigación de campo, en la que participaron 26 profesionales de asistencia estudiantil de cuatro universidades federales de la región Sudeste de Brasil. A partir del concepto nativo de cultura institucional, el artículo discute si la asistencia estudiantil es asistencia social y concluye que el debate en torno de la asistencia estudiantil no es nuevo y moviliza diferentes capitales científicos en una disputa de perspectivas en torno a lo que puede considerarse asistencia estudiantil ideal.Le but de ce travail est de comprendre comment l’aide aux étudiants se constitue en champ scientifique et domaine d’exercice professionnel et se développe sur la base des services d’appui aux étudiants. L’approche est qualitative et inclue une revue de la littérature, l’analyse de la législation et l’étude sur le terrain avec 26 professionnels du service de l’aide aux étudiants de quatre universités du Sud-Est brésilien. À l’appui du concept natif de culture institutionnelle, cet article discute la question de savoir si l’aide aux étudiants équivaut à l’aide sociale. On conclue que le débat sur l’aide aux étudiants n’est pas récent et met en jeu plusieurs capitaux scientifiques dans une dispute de points de vue autour de ce qui peut être tenu pour une aide aux étudiants idéale.O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender como a assistência estudantil vem se constituindo como campo científico e área específica de atuação profissional e se desenvolvendo a partir de serviços de apoio aos estudantes. A abordagem é qualitativa e inclui levantamento bibliográfico, análise da legislação e pesquisa de campo, a qual envolveu 26 profissionais da assistência estudantil de quatro universidades federais da região Sudeste.
