Resumo: This paper presents the theory of social representations as a model of social scientific theory. In doing so, it attempts to reconstruct the foundations of the theory of social representations by focusing on intellectual resources that were available to Serge Moscovici during the time he was developing the theory. These resources shaped his epistemology, and firmly distinguished the theory of social representations from other social psychological approaches. The focus on these intellectual resources draws attention to two issues. First, in contrast to what Moscovici often called ‘one or two sentence theories’ in social psychology based on the manipulation of variables, the theory of social representations is built on a rich set of presuppositions. Second, an explicit recognition of presuppositions of social representations in their application in professional practices like education, politics and health, among others, enables a unique contribution to social sciences and humanities.

Al hacerlo, se trató de reconstruir los fundamentos de dicha teoría, concentrándose en los recursos intelectuales que se encontraban disponibles para Serge Moscovici en el trascurso de su desarrollo. Tales recursos dieron forma a la epistemología que firmemente distingue la teoria de las representaciones sociales de otros abordajes psicosociales. El enfoque sobre esos recursos intelectuales llama la atención para dos puntos. En primer lugar, al contrario de lo que Moscovici muchas veces llamó de “teorías de una o dos frases”, al referirse a la psicología social basada en la manipulación de variables, la teoría de las representaciones sociales ha sido elaborada sobre un rico conjunto de presuposiciones. En segundo, el reconocimiento explícito de las presuposiciones de las representaciones sociales en su empleo en las prácticas profesionales, como educación, política y salud, permite una contribución única para las ciencias sociales y humanas.Cet article présente la théorie des représentations sociales comme un modèle de théorie scientifique sociale. Il cherche à reconstituer les fondements de cette théorie, en centrant l’attention sur les ressources intellectuelles qui étaient disponibles pour Serge Moscovici lorsqu’il développait sa théorie. Ces ressources ont donné forme à l’épistémologie qui distingue fermement la théorie des représentations sociales d’autres approches psychosociales. La place centrale accordée à ces ressources intellectuelles attire l’attention sur deux questions. Premièrement, à la différence de ce que Moscovici a souvent nommé «théories d’une ou deux phrases», en référence à la psychologie sociale basée sur la manipulation de variables, la théorie des représentations sociales est construite sur un riche ensemble de présupposés. Deuxièmement, la reconnaissance explicite des présupposés des représentations sociales dans leur application aux pratiques professionnelles, comme l’éducation, la politique et la santé, peut contribuer de manière unique aux sciences sociales et humaines.O presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar a teoria das representações sociais como um modelo de teoria científica social. Ao fazê-lo, buscou-se reconstruir os fundamentos da referida teoria, concentrando-se nos recursos intelectuais que estavam disponíveis para Serge Moscovici no decorrer do desenvolvimento da mesma. Tais recursos deram forma à epistemologia que firmemente distingue a teoria das representações sociais de outras abordagens psicossociais. O foco sobre esses recursos intelectuais chama a atenção para duas questões. Em primeiro lugar, ao contrário do que Moscovici muitas vezes chamou de “teorias de uma ou duas frases”, ao fazer referência à psicologia social baseada na manipulação de variáveis, a teoria das representações sociais é construída sobre um rico conjunto de pressupostos.
