Early childhood education and the school question: the French case

Resumo: In the last thirty years, priority given to a school rationale meant to justify pre-schooling has coincided with a twofold change within the institution. The first change is about the relations the nursery school maintains with compulsory schooling and with the structure necessary for taking care of small children. Another one relates to school curriculum reforms and to the development of assessment processes. Nursery school — a place where small children are welcomed and taken care of as well as educated and prepared for school — has become a school in its own right, as far as the institution itself is concerned. The dissemination of international comparisons has contributed to such changes.

El primero de ellos se refiere a las relaciones que la escuela maternal mantiene con la escolarización obligatoria y con las estructuras de cuidados para los niños pequeños. El outro se refi ere a las reformas del currículo escolar y al desarrollo de los procesos de evaluación. La escuela maternal, sitio de acogida, de cuidados y de preparación para la escuela, se convirtió institucionalmente en una verdadera escuela. La difusión de las comparaciones internacionales contribuyó para estos cambios.Nos últimos trinta anos, a prioridade dada a uma lógica escolar para justificar a pré-escola coincide com uma dupla mudança na instituição. A primeira diz respeito às relações que a escola maternal mantém com a escolarização obrigatória e com as estruturas de cuidados para as crianças pequenas. A outra refere-se às reformas do currículo escolar e ao desenvolvimento dos processos de avaliação. A escola maternal, local de acolhimento, de cuidados e de preparação para a escola, tornou-se institucionalmente uma verdadeira escola.
