Summary: This study aims to carry out an analysis and reflection on the UDC 821 class, Language, Linguistics and Literature, with the aim of developing a proposal to expand the classification for Brazilian Literature capable of detaching it from Portuguese Literature, highlighting its particularities and improve the possibilities of organization and recovery in school libraries. The research was done in the context of an introductory course on thematic representation, using Project Based Learning as a teaching method. The UDC is a bibliographic classification created to be extensible, to cover knowledge in its universality as well as to cover its particularities, characteristics that allow adaptations. First, the construction of the theoretical framework was made, analyzing the theory and practice of Bibliographic Classification and the history of Brazilian Literature. Then, using experimental procedures, a classification was formulated based on Brazilian literary periods and literary genres. Finally, the classification was used in a real collection, only as a test, when the observed flaws were repaired. From the results obtained, it is considered that such expansion has great potential for application, allowing the user to relate issues and expand their perceptions about the theme, in addition to directly contributing to the demand for knowledge about literature. At the end, the inclusion of indigenous literature is indicated, making it possible to relate the different Brazilian literary styles that reflect their cultural diversity.
