Innovative behaviors: a survey about their associated effects in a dynamic environment

Resumo: Purpose – New organizational arrangements are crucial for firms that want to innovate, particularly for those that are highly dependent on digital technologies. Hence, innovative behaviors play a vital role in resetting organizational practices. This research examines the impact of innovative ideas on innovation performance-oriented behaviors and tries to understand the role of employees’ experimentation and collaboration-oriented behaviors. Theoretical framework – The organizational behavior and innovation literature is the theoretical lens used to support the research. Design/methodology/approach – The literature review focuses on a stream of research on innovative behaviors, raising questions about behavioral relationships. A set of hypotheses is tested through structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate the associated effects of innovative ideas, experimentation, collaboration, and innovative performance-oriented behaviors in a digital transformative context. The sample consists of 106 employees from a Brazilian e-commerce firm. Findings –The findings reveal that only collaboration-oriented behaviors have a positive mediating effect between innovative ideas and innovation performance-oriented behaviors. Experimentation-oriented behaviors have no effect as mediators on innovation performance-oriented behaviors or as influencers on collaboration-oriented behaviors. Innovative ideas have no direct effect on innovation performance-oriented behaviors, but they do have a positive effect when mediated by collaboration and experimentation. Practical & social implications of research – Collaboration and experimentation-oriented behaviors are explored separately, and this distinction is also important for innovation management theory and for firms by showing how two specific types of behaviors, which are differently correlated, influence innovation performance-oriented behaviors in dynamic environments. Originality/value – The study’s main contribution is related to it demonstrating the value of innovative behaviors for innovation management in practice, showing that a different behavioral approach can support firms in achieving innovativeness. Portanto, os comportamentos inovadores desempenham um papel fundamental na redefinição das práticas organizacionais. Esta pesquisa examina o impacto das ideias inovadoras nos comportamentos orientados para o desempenho da inovação e tenta entender o papel da experimentação dos funcionários e dos comportamentos orientados para a colaboração. Referencial teórico – A literatura sobre comportamento organizacional e inovação é a lente teórica usada para apoiar a pesquisa. Metodologia – A revisão da literatura concentra-se em um fluxo de pesquisa sobre comportamentos inovadores, levantando questões sobre relações comportamentais. Um conjunto de hipóteses é testado por meio de modelagem de equações estruturais (structural equation modeling – SEM) para investigar os efeitos associados de ideias inovadoras, experimentação, colaboração e comportamentos inovadores orientados para o desempenho em um contexto de transformação digital. A amostra é composta por 106 funcionários de uma empresa brasileira de comércio eletrônico. Resultados – Os resultados revelam que somente os comportamentos orientados para a colaboração têm um efeito mediador positivo entre as ideias inovadoras e os comportamentos orientados para o desempenho da inovação. Os comportamentos orientados para a experimentação não têm efeito como mediadores dos comportamentos orientados para o desempenho da inovação ou como influenciadores dos comportamentos orientados para a colaboração. As ideias inovadoras não têm efeito direto sobre os comportamentos orientados para o desempenho da inovação, mas têm um efeito positivo quando mediadas pela colaboração e pela experimentação. Implicações práticas e sociais da investigação – Os comportamentos orientados para a colaboração e para a experimentação são explorados separadamente, e essa distinção também é importante para a teoria da gestão da inovação e para as empresas, mostrando como dois tipos específicos de comportamentos, que são correlacionados de forma diferente, influenciam os comportamentos orientados para o desempenho da inovação em ambientes dinâmicos. Contribuições – A principal contribuição do estudo está relacionada ao fato de ele demonstrar o valor dos comportamentos inovadores para a gestão da inovação na prática, mostrando que uma abordagem comportamental diferente pode ajudar as empresas a alcançar a inovação.
