Organization Resources in Cold Storage Facilities and their Relations with the Implementation of Environmental Sustainability Strategies: the Marfrig Alimentos S.A. Group case

Resumo: The aim of the paper is to specify, according to the classification used by Barney (1991) and Hall (1992), the tangible and intangible resources used by an organization to establish its environmental strategies. The study was carried out in corporation Seara Marfrig, which includes the poultry and pork division of the Marfrig Alimentos S.A. Group and is responsible for managing brands Seara, Mabella, DaGranja, Pena Branca, and has 30 plants located in various states of Brazil. As to the approach, this research work is focused on the qualitative aspect and uses the technique of semi-structured interviews and secondary collection of data from the company website. As for the procedures, it is classified as a case study. It was found that there is a predominance of intangible resources that are mobilized to enable the environmental strategy. Other features considered essential in this context of analysis and which were mentioned by respondents consist of culture, reputation, intellectual capital, knowledge, innovation, quality, reputation, brand, and finances. We conclude that the resources with value and rarity are capable of replication, but throughout a longer period of time and are linked to the culture and organizational routines specific to the company. Therefore, the contribution of this research is – from a monitoring exercise in an organization of the cold storage industry – a better understanding of the relations between the use of its resources and the implementation of environmental strategies in companies.Key words: Environmental strategy. El objetivo de este trabajo es especificar, de acuerdo con la clasificación utilizada por Barney (1991) y Hall (1992), los recursos tangibles e intangibles utilizados por una organización para establecer su estrategia ambiental. El estudio se llevó a cabo en la empresa Seara Marfrig, que incluye la división de las aves de corral y carne de cerdo de Marfrig Alimentos SA y que se encarga de gestionar las marcas Seara Mabella, DaGranja, Pena Branca, que posee 30 plantas ubicadas en varios estados de Brasil. En cuanto a la forma de abordar el problema, este trabajo de investigación se centra en la calidad y utiliza la técnica de entrevistas semiestructuradas y recolección de datos secundarios en la página web de la compañía. En cuanto a los procedimientos, se clasifica como estudio de caso. Se encontró que hay un predominio de los recursos intangibles que se movilizan para hacer viable la estrategia medioambiental. Otras características consideradas esenciales en este contexto de análisis y que fueron citados por los encuestados consisten en la cultura, la reputación, el capital intelectual, el conocimiento, la innovación, la calidad, la reputación de la marca y las finanzas. Llegamos a la conclusión de que los recursos con valor y rareza son capaces de reproducirse, pero en un período más largo de tiempo y están vinculadas a la cultura y a las rutinas de organización de su propia empresa. Por lo tanto, la contribución de esta investigación es, desde un ejercicio de control en una organización del sector de los frigoríficos, mejorar la comprensión de la relación entre el uso de sus recursos y poner en práctica las estrategias medioambientales en las empresas.Palabras clave: Estrategia medioambiental. O objetivo do artigo consiste em especificar, segundo classificação utilizada por Barney (1991) e Hall (1992), os recursos tangíveis e intangíveis usados por uma organização para estabelecer estratégias voltadas à sustentabilidade ambiental. O trabalho foi desenvolvido na corporação Seara Marfrig, que engloba a divisão aves e suínos do Grupo Marfrig Alimentos S.A. e é responsável pelo gerenciamento das marcas Seara, Mabella, DaGranja e Pena Branca, possuindo 30 unidades industriais localizadas em diversos estados do Brasil. No que diz respeito à forma de abordagem do problema, a presente pesquisa trabalha sob o enfoque qualitativo e utiliza a técnica da entrevista semiestruturada e coleta de dados secundários no site da empresa. Quanto aos procedimentos, classifica-se como um estudo de caso. Constatou-se que há um predomínio de recursos intangíveis que são mobilizados para viabilizar a estratégia ambiental. Outros recursos considerados fundamentais nesse contexto de análise e que foram citados pelos entrevistados consistem na cultura, reputação, tecnologias, capital intelectual, conhecimento, capacidade de inovação, qualidade, reputação, marca e finanças. Conclui-se que os recursos que apresentam valor e raridade são passíveis de replicação, mas em um período maior, e estão associados à cultura e rotinas organizacionais próprias da empresa. Portanto, a contribuição desta pesquisa consiste em, a partir de um exercício de análise em uma organização do setor de frigoríficos, ampliar o entendimento das relações existentes entre a utilização de seus recursos e a implementação de estratégias ambientais nas empresas.Palavras-chave: Estratégia ambiental.
