Strategic profiles in Brazil: a study of postal agents franchisees from the typology of Miles and Snow

Resumo: This paper consisted of a descriptive study in franchised postal agencies located in 110 municipalities of Minas Gerais. Its objective was to examine whether the strategic typology originally proposed by Miles and Snow (1978) and adapted by DeSarbo et al. (2005), was able to differentiate adaptation strategies of the sample. For this With this objective in mind  we’ve made a survey in which data were collected through the questionnaire proposed by DeSarbo et al. (2005). These data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and cluster analysis, multivariate technique that allows the identification of similarities among the respondents. The study has investigated the differences between strategic profiles identified in the sample in relation to its strategic capabilities and their perceptions of environmental risks. The results indicated that the typology proposed by DeSarbo et al. (2005) is able to differentiate adaptation strategies of companies in a franchise network. Further test results allowed considering relevant and enriching way of investigation of strategic capabilities and environmental uncertainties of the method proposed by the authors.Key words: Strategic types. Adaptation. Cluster analysis.  Este trabajo consistió en una investigación descriptiva en las Agencias con Franquicia del Correo (ACFs), ubicadas en ciento diez municipios del Estado de Minas Gerais. El objetivo era examinar si la tipología estratégica originalmente propuesta por Miles y Snow (1978) y adaptada por DeSarbo et al. (2005), era capaz de diferenciar las estrategias de adaptación de la muestra considerada. Para ello, se realizó una encuesta en la que se recolectaron datos por medio del cuestionario propuesto por DeSarbo et al. (2005). Posteriormente se analizaron los datos por estadísticas descriptivas y análisis de conglomerados, técnica multivariada que permite identificar similitudes entre los encuestados. El estudio investigó las diferencias entre los perfiles estratégicos identificados en la muestra con relación a las capacidades estratégicas, así como la percepción de los riesgos ambientales. Los resultados indicaron que la tipología propuesta por DeSarbo et al. (2005) es capaz de diferenciar las estrategias de adaptación de las empresas en una red de franquicias. Además el resultado de la prueba permitió considerar relevante y enriquecedora la forma de investigar las capacidades estratégicas y las incertidumbres ambientales que los autores del método propusieron. Este trabalho consistiu em uma pesquisa descritiva nas Agências de Correios Franqueadas (ACFs), localizadas em cento e dez municípios do Estado de Minas Gerais. O objetivo foi analisar se a tipologia estratégica proposta originalmente por Miles e Snow (1978) e adaptada por DeSarbo et al. (2005), era capaz de diferenciar as estratégias de adaptação da amostra considerada. Para isso, foi feita uma pesquisa na qual os dados foram coletados por meio do questionário proposto por DeSarbo et al. (2005). Em seguida, esses dados foram analisados via estatísticas descritivas e análise de aglomerados, técnica multivariada que permite a identificação de similaridades entre os respondentes. A pesquisa investigou as diferenças entre os perfis estratégicos identificados na amostra, em relação às capacidades estratégicas, bem como percepções de riscos ambientais. Os resultados indicaram que a tipologia proposta por DeSarbo et al. (2005) é capaz de diferenciar as estratégias de adaptação de empresas de uma rede de franquias. Além disso, o resultado do teste permitiu considerar relevante e enriquecedora a forma de investigação das capacidades estratégicas e das incertezas ambientais propostas pelos autores do método.
