STRATEGIC ADAPTATION OF A BUSINESS GROUP ORIGINATED IN A SAFETY MATCHES INDUSTRY

Resumo: The issue of environmental determinism and voluntarism has generated extensive discussion in the strategy area. This paper analyzes the process of strategic adaptation of a business group originated in a safety matches industry. A longitudinal case study was used, with data collection conducted through documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews, further an analysis via contextual and procedural approach proposed by Pettigrew (1987), and through the determinism and voluntarism model proposed by Hrebiniak and Joyce (1985). The results demonstrate that voluntarism prevailed on the adapting process of the company, sometimes accompanied by high environmental determinism.

En este artículo se analiza el proceso de ajuste estratégico de un grupo empresarial con origen en la industria de los fósforos de seguridad a través de un estudio de caso longitudinal. La recolección de datos se realizó mediante el análisis de documentos y entrevistas, y análisis mediante el enfoque contextual y la propuesta procedimentalista por Pettigrew (1987), y el modelo propuesto por Hrebiniak y Joyce (1985 ) . Los resultados demuestran que el voluntarismo predominado en el proceso de adaptación de la empresa, a veces acompañados de alta determinismo ambiental.A questão do determinismo ambiental e do voluntarismo tem gerado ampla discussão na área da estratégia. Este trabalho analisa o processo de adaptação estratégica de um grupo empresarial com origem na indústria de fósforos de segurança, através de um estudo de caso longitudinal. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de análise documental e entrevistas, além de análise através da abordagem contextualista e processualista proposta porPettigrew (1987), e do modelo proposto por Hrebiniak e Joyce (1985).
