Contribution in the Review of the Literature on Productivity in the Scope of Business Economics

Resumo: | This paper discusses the concept of productivity of the firm and its evolution, as well as the techniques that may be used to manage and measure it. The three-fold structure adopted in the literature review relates to the chronological order of publication and is based upon common characteristics identified in past research. Section 2 includes studies on productivity published until the eighties of the last century and concerns to normative-deductive research. Section 3 discusses some studies dating from the following two decades and refers to how to manage and measure the productivity of the firm. Section 4 reviews positive (empirical) productivity research, which relates to recent published papers. These studies are usually authored by researchers’ teams from various centers or countries and analyze large amounts of data, making use of databases, computers and statistics, thus, giving some insight on de factum productivity of the firm. The contribution of this research is summarized in Section 5. We conclude that there has been a shift in the research focus: external, normative and descriptive studies substitute internal, managerial and positive research on the productivity of the firm.Key-words: Productivity. Literature review.Con el propósito de contribuir a la comprensión del concepto de productividad empresarial y de la utilidad de su gestión, se procede a la revisión de la literatura sobre productividad económica empresarial, con especial énfasis en la evolución del concepto de este indicador y en los modelos adoptados en su medida. Se excluyen del análisis otras perspectivas comunes al tratar el tema, como el punto de vista de la ingeniería. La observación de características comunes entre los estudios analizados permitió distribuirlos en tres grupos, que sirvieron de base a la estructura adoptada en esta investigación. De forma que el estudio se divide en cinco secciones. Después de la Introducción, la Sección 2, analiza estudios sobre productividad empresarial publicados hasta el inicio de los años 80 del siglo pasado, fase en la que se busca aclarar el concepto de productividad empresarial y que por este motivo se denomina fase del deber ser de la productividad. En la Sección 3 se comentan estudios elaborados en las dos décadas siguientes, que, destinados a la gestión de la productividad, tratan de establecer formas alternativas de cálculo y medición de la productividad empresarial. En la Sección 4 se hace referencia a estudios empíricos que dan a conocer la productividad de factum. En general, estos estudios más recientes están a cargo de equipos de investigadores pertenecientes a diferentes centros o países y procesan grandes volúmenes de datos, por medio de modernos recursos informáticos y métodos estadísticos que permiten probar los resultados obtenidos. Finaliza en la Sección 5, con conclusiones breves sobre aspectos observados en la evolución de la literatura sobre productividad empresarial y se constata que hubo cambios en la perspectiva adaptada en los estudios sobre productividad empresarial.Palabras clave: Productividad empresarial. Eficiencia.Com o propósito de contribuir para a compreensão do conceito de produtividade empresarial e da utilidade da sua gestão, procede-se a uma revisão da literatura sobre produtividade economia empresarial, com especial ênfase na evolução do conceito deste indicador e nos moldes adoptados na sua medida. Excluem-se da análise outras perspectivas comuns no tratamento do tema, como seja a óptica da engenharia. A observação de características comuns entre os estudos analisados permitiu arrumá-los em três grupos, que, serviram de base à estrutura adoptada nesta investigação. Assim, o estudo divide-se em cinco secções. Depois da Introdução, a Secção 2, analisa estudos sobre produtividade empresarial publicados até ao início dos anos 80 do século passado, fase em que se procura clarificar o conceito de produtividade empresarial e a que, por isso, se atribui a denominação de fase do dever ser da produtividade. Na Secção 3 comentam-se estudos elaborados nas duas décadas seguintes, que, vocacionados para a gestão da produtividade, tentam estabelecer formas alternativas de cálculo e medição da produtividade empresarial. Na Secção 4 faz-se referência a estudos empíricos que dão a conhecer a produtividade de factum. Em geral, estes estudos mais recentes são desenvolvidos por equipas de investigadores pertencentes a diferentes centros ou países e tratam grandes volumes de dados, recorrendo a modernos recursos informáticos e a métodos estatísticos que permitem testar os resultados obtidos. Termina-se, na Secção 5, com conclusões breves acerca de aspectos observados na evolução da literatura sobre produtividade empresarial, observando-se ter havido uma mudança na perspectiva adoptada nos estudos sobre produtividade empresarial.
