Sustainable Strategies and Export Performance: an analysis of companies in the gems and jewelry industry

Resumo: This study had the aim of analyzing the relationbetween the use of sustainable managementstrategies and the export performance inmanufacturing companies of the gems and jewelryindustry. Sustainable strategies were analyzedfrom the adaptation of the strategic model of theAmerican Battelle Institute, introduced by Placet,Anderson and Fowler (2005), which addresses theinteraction of economic, social and environmentalaspects with the perspective of innovation, andimpacts on the company and on the society.The export performance was analyzed based onthe adaptation of the model of Papadopoulosand Martín (2010), which develops and tests aformative measure of the export performance, andidentifies and quantifies the relative contributionof its consequences to the economic and strategicdimensions. The research is characterized asdescriptive and quantitative, and was conductedthrough a survey. Therefore, it was highlightedthat the sustainability dimensions are related tothe export performance of companies in the gemsand jewelry industry. Thus, it was suggested thatsustainable business strategies can substantiallycontribute to the export performance, throughthe guidance towards economic, social andenvironmental results to the organization and itsstakeholders.Keywords: Sustainable strategies. As estratégiassustentáveis foram analisadas a partir daadaptação do modelo estratégico do InstitutoAmericano Battelle, apresentado por Placet, Andersone Fowler (2005), que aborda a interaçãodos aspectos econômico, social e ambiental coma perspectiva de inovação e reflexos na empresae na sociedade. O desempenho exportador foianalisado com base na adaptação do modelo dePapadopoulos e Martín (2010), que desenvolvee testa uma medida formativa do desempenhoexportador e identifica e quantifica a contribuiçãorelativa das suas consequências nas dimensões econômicae estratégica. A pesquisa caracteriza-se comodescritiva e quantitativa, e foi conduzida por meiode um survey. Sendo assim, evidenciou-se que asdimensões da sustentabilidade estão relacionadascom o desempenho exportador das empresasdo setor de gemas e joias. Dessa forma, ficousugerido que estratégias de negócios sustentáveispodem contribuir substancialmente para odesempenho exportador, por meio da orientação para resultados econômicos, sociais e ambientais à organização e a seus stakeholders.Palavras-chave: Estratégias sustentáveis.
