Resumo: The research question that is addressed in thisarticle is the following: what do the executivesfrom small retailing firms learn in their workenvironment? The theoretical framework of thestudy is based on texts from the field of learning.This is a qualitative investigation. Ten interviewswith clothing retail executives were carriedout. Later, these interviews were transcribedand analyzed. In the data analysis stage, twocategories were established in response to theresearch question. Regarding the first, respondentsperceived difficulties (problems) in their workenvironments and obtained specific informationand knowledge in order to deal with thesesituations. So as to overcome different professionaldifficulties, respondents learned about colors andtypes of fabric and about certain manufacturingprocess aspects referring to the clothing soldby their companies. They also declared to havelearned about their companies’ suppliers andabout certain issues referring to sales, and to theaccounting and the financial management of theircompanies. The second category refers to a changein some of the respondents’ habits. This learningcontent refers to predispositions to respond and/or act in situations at their work environments.Respondents reported having changed the waythey related to other people. They emphasizedthat they had learned how to interact with theemployees at their stores and how to carry outsupervision. Differently from other studies, wefound that the retailers’ learning (individuallearning) affected their companies’ learning(organizational learning) through changes incertain aspects of the analyzed companies’organizational structures.Keywords: Managers’ learning. Retail executives.A questão de pesquisa que é abordada neste artigoé a seguinte: o que executivos de pequenasempresas varejistas aprendem em seus ambientesde trabalho? O arcabouço teórico do estudo tomacomo base textos do campo da aprendizagem. Estaé uma investigação qualitativa. Foram realizadasdez entrevistas com executivos do setor de varejode vestuário. Posteriormente, essas entrevistasforam transcritas e analisadas. Na etapa de análisede dados, foram construídas duas categorias comorespostas à questão de pesquisa. No tocante à primeira,os respondentes perceberam dificuldades(problemas) em seus ambientes de trabalho e obtiveraminformações e conhecimentos específicosde modo a lidarem com essas situações. A fim desuperarem diferentes dificuldades profissionais osrespondentes aprenderam sobre cores e tipos detecido e sobre o processo de fabricação dos artigosde vestuário que eram comercializados por suasfirmas. Eles também declararam ter aprendidosobre os fornecedores de suas firmas e sobrealgumas questões relacionadas com as vendas, acontabilidade e a administração financeira de suasempresas. A segunda categoria refere-se à alteraçãode alguns dos hábitos dos respondentes. Esse conteúdode aprendizagem refere-se às predisposiçõespara responderem e/ou atuarem em situaçõesde seus ambientes de trabalho. Os entrevistadosmencionaram ter modificado o modo como serelacionavam com outras pessoas. Eles enfatizaramter aprendido sobre as maneiras de interação comas funcionárias de suas lojas e como exerciam a tarefade supervisão. Divergindo de outros estudos,constatou-se que a aprendizagem dos varejistas(aprendizagem individual) afetou a aprendizagemde suas firmas (aprendizagem organizacional) pormeio de mudanças em alguns aspectos da estrutura organizacional das firmas estudadas.Palavras-chave: Aprendizagem de gerentes.Aprendizagem organizacional.
