Resumo: The work is primarily concerned with the history painting by Antônio Parreiras on walls of public buildings in Brazil's First Republic (1889-1930). Reflexion is made on the themes explored in this sort of painting and on its relationship to Brazilian historiography, as well as on the response of Parreiras to the figurative requirements by power in Brazil's federal states in this cultural field whose aim was the public education for the building of Brazilian nationality. The work bases itself on documents of the Museum Antônio Parreiras, in Niterói. Among these documents are a manuscript by the painter on his own history paintings, painting agreements with states governors, as well as the artist's correspondence with critics of his time.

Editora FGV2002-05-31info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2170Revista Estudos Históricos; Vol. 2 No. 30 (2002): Art and History; 3-22Revista Estudos Históricos; v. 2 n. 30 (2002): Arte e História; 3-222178-14940103-2186reponame:Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro)instname:Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)instacron:FGVporhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2170/1309Salgueiro, Valériainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2017-06-14T21:00:08Zoai:ojs.periodicos.fgv.br:article/2170Revistahttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rehONGhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/oai||biblioteca.digital@fgv.br||eh@fgv.br2178-14940103-2186opendoar:2024-03-06T13:01:40.064838Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) - Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)true
