Resumo: The article is an analysis of the social construction of the persona Rio Branco, the official patron and symbol of Brazilian diplomacy. Based on the analysis of the two main biographies of this personality, both reprinted for the celebration of his 150th anniversary, we propose that his persona has been built from the fusion of the life stories of two biological individuals: José Maria da Silva Paranhos father and son, respectively Vicount and Baron of Rio Branco. The biographies are treated as narratives of a myth of origin of Brazilian diplomacy, appropriated by present-day diplomats ' self-called members of the House of Rio Branco ' to give meaning to their professional identities. Finally, the intention is to show how the narratives work as a succession of metamorphoses which allow Rio Branco to symbolize a multiplicity of world views and value scales which would possibly be conflicting but can coexist through the mythic narrative.

Editora FGV2000-07-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2113Revista Estudos Históricos; Vol. 14 No. 25 (2000): National Heroes; 81-102Revista Estudos Históricos; v. 14 n. 25 (2000): Heróis Nacionais; 81-1022178-14940103-2186reponame:Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro)instname:Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)instacron:FGVporhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/2113/1252Moura, Cristina Patriotainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2017-06-14T21:01:18Zoai:ojs.periodicos.fgv.br:article/2113Revistahttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rehONGhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/oai||biblioteca.digital@fgv.br||eh@fgv.br2178-14940103-2186opendoar:2024-03-06T13:01:36.753683Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) - Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)true
