Resumo: This article discusses issues that emerge from the search of primary sources related to Juliano Moreira and his psychiatric theories from the end of the 19th century until 1920. Such a search derives from the interest in the relationship between this scientific production and the setting up of a Brazilian civilizing project. It is an ethnographic account of the field of historical archives, the statute of originality granted to private collections and dated documents, the resulting effects for the reconstruction of the history of psychiatry in Brazil and the meaning of the ideas of science and truth involved in it.
