Resumo: Based on an analysis of the festive consumption of funk music in Rio de Janeiro, the article offers a criticism of the most widely disseminated theories on popular culture. Despite its proportions, this mass phenomenom remains unknown to a large part of the city's population and its mass media. Rio's funk phenomenom is investigated as an example of the cultural heterogeneity of contemporary metropolises and as an example of how it is possible for the cultural industry to interact with that which is heterogenous, without seeking to homogenize it.
