“A dance over the abyss”: the strategies of José Américo de Almeida’s candidacy in the presidential campaign of 1937

Resumo: The presidential campaign of 1937 took place in a competitive scenario, with two candidates who divided the government’s allied base and the authoritarian attacks by Getúlio Vargas, as well as politicians and military personnel close to him. The objective of this text is to identify the strategies mobilized by José Américo deAlmeida and his coreligionists to make feasible and execute his candidacy. We could observe that this group was not passive in the scenario presented, mobilizing tools available to them in various ways, in order to form a program and an electoral base built upon an interpretation of the project of the Revolution of 1930.

El objetivo de este texto es identificar las estrategias movilizadas por José Américo de Almeida y sus correligionarios para viabilizar y ejecutar su candidatura. Se pudo observar que este grupo no fue pasivo en el escenario que se presentó. Las herramientas de que disponían se movilizaron, de diversas formas, para conformar un programa y una base electoral a partir de una interpretación del proyecto de la Revolución de1930.A campanha presidencial de 1937 aconteceu em ambiente competitivo, com dois candidatos que dividiram a base aliada do governo, e em meio a investidas autoritárias de Getúlio Vargas, políticos e militares próximos a ele. O objetivo deste texto é identificar as estratégias mobilizadas por José Américo de Almeida e seus correligionáriospara viabilizar e executar a sua candidatura.
