Elections in two stages: Minas Gerais representation in the Chamber of Deputies (1852 and 1856)

Resumo: The electoral Law of 1855 promised a profound change in Brazilian parliamentary representation, with district voting and ineligibility. What is the impact of this law on the province with the largest bench in the Empire? This study identified and compared the profile of elected representation in Minas Gerais before and after the reform, using various sources: almanacs, periodicals, presidential reports, parliamentary debates and biographies. It was concluded that the Law of Circles brought significant party diversity and debut of local elites from Minas Gerais in Parliament. Thus, a new law was adopted in 1860, to reduce its unpredictability.

Este estudio identificó y comparó el perfil de la representación minera electa antes y después de la reforma, utilizando diversas fuentes: almanaques, periódicos, informes presidenciales, debates parlamentarios y biografías. Se concluyó que la Ley de Círculos trajo una importante diversidad partidaria y debut de las elites locales de Minas Gerais en el Parlamento.
