Resumo: Taking as a reference the thought of Hannah Arendt, this paper analyses the public/private opposition focusing on the historical changes in the two concepts and on their consequences, since 19th century, for the archival practice both in terms of conservation and publication of documents. The author also examines the problem of human rights as related to archives (the right to information and the right to privacy) pointing out that it reflects the confrontation between public and private during the last three centuries. Finally, there is a discussion of the problem of accessing documents, particularly in the case of private archives.

Finally, there is a discussion of the problem of accessing documents, particularly in the case of private archives.Tomando como referência o pensamento de Hannah Arendt, o texto discorre, em um primeiro momento, sobre o binômio público/privado, procurando observar as transformações ocorridas, historicamente, nas concepções dos dois conceitos, bem como suas repercussões, a partir do século XIX, na prática arquivística tanto no que diz respeito à conservação dos arquivos, quanto ao acesso às informações neles contidas. Em seguida, a autora tece considerações sobre a trajetória de dois direitos humanos implicados diretamente com a problemática dos arquivos - o direito à informação e o direito à privacidade - observando que essa trajetória acompanha (ou reflete) o embate entre o público e o privado, ao longo dos três últimos séculos. Por fim, algumas informações sobre a realidade dos arquivos, com enfoque na questão do acesso, particularmente no que diz respeito aos arquivos privados.
