Resumo: Founded by a group politicians and scholars in 1838, the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute became the most important intellectual institution of the Brazilian Empire, sponsored as it was by Emperor Pedro II himself. After the Republic was proclaimed, the Institute has undergone a period of stagnation, because of its links with the ancien régime. However, after 1908, under the direction of the Barão do Rio Branco, the IHGB recovered its supremacy in Brazilian cultural science. It then turned its attention to the Pan-American reality, and one of its achievements was the subject of this paper: the International Congress of History of the Americas, held in 1922.

Pedro II.
