Resumo: The great progress reached by medicaI science in this century has improved the proffie of its workers and the quality of its services. Nevertheless, the question of quantifying and qualifying the human resources needed for the development of severa! programs and services for specific populations has not been discussed. Speaking more objectively, the market and its needs have not been assessed. This has happened with the medicaI class: in somecountries, these professionals have outnumbered what is needed to take care of the population. This paper intends to anaIyze the number of physicians per region and state in Brazil considering the demographic, economic and funding aspects of health care.

This paper intends to anaIyze the number of physicians per region and state in Brazil considering the demographic, economic and funding aspects of health care.medicina viveu e vive grandes transformações neste século, que fizeram com que as categorias profissionais ligadas à área da saúde obtivessem avanços importantes, melhorando o perfil dos seus profissionais e trazendo retornos valiosos para a população em termos de promoção da saúde, prevenção da doença, diagnóstico, tratamento e reabilitação. O avanço tecnológico,obtido principalmente a partir da década de 70, a adequação da área física de unidades de saúde, principalmente as do hospital, os programas de acreditação e, em alguns países, a evolução da administração dos serviços de saúde contribuíram para alcançar essas vantagens. Sem a participação de fatores associados a educação,. saneamento do meio, economia e mudanças nos valores sociais, isto teria sido impossível. De uma certa forma, deixou-se de discutir a questão da quantificação e qualificação dos recursos humanos necessários ao desenvolvimento de diversos programas e serviços para determinadas populações, ou, de uma maneira mais objetiva, deixou-se de quantificar omercado e suas necessidades. Este foi o caso ocorrido com a categoria médica: em alguns países, o número destes profissionais já supera o necessário para o atendimento à população.
