This study discusses organizational control in contemporary organizations: its transformations, its relation with culture and its impact on the role of leadership. The central thesis is that organizational control emphasizes the use of normative mechanisms, stressing on culture and the sharing of dominantvalues. Such an emphasis, however, does not exclude but aggravates the centralizing mechanisms of bureaucratic control, found, to a large extent, in the new information and management technologies, which allow long distance monitoring. This “strong hand with kid gloves” that characterizes organizational control exerts and requires a transformation on the role of leadership,  representing a “return to charisma”, an embodiment of thelegitimization structures (Courpasson, 2000a).
