Resumo: | This study discusses organizational control in contemporary organizations: its transformations, its relation with culture and its impact on the role of leadership. The central thesis is that organizational control emphasizes the use of normative mechanisms, stressing on culture and the sharing of dominantvalues. Such an emphasis, however, does not exclude but aggravates the centralizing mechanisms of bureaucratic control, found, to a large extent, in the new information and management technologies, which allow long distance monitoring. This “strong hand with kid gloves” that characterizes organizational control exerts and requires a transformation on the role of leadership, representing a “return to charisma”, an embodiment of thelegitimization structures (Courpasson, 2000a). |

A tese central afirma que o controle organizacional acentua atualmente a utilização de mecanismos normativos, dando uma grande ênfase à cultura e ao compartilhamento de uma visão de mundo dominante. Essa ênfase, no entanto, não exclui, ao contrário, oferece suporte para um acirramento dos controles centralizadores representados pelo modo burocrático, em grande parte inseridos nas novas tecnologias de informação e gestão, que permitem uma vigilância a distância. Esse punho de ferro em luva de pelica, em que se transformou o controle organizacional nas organizações atuais, opera e necessita de uma transformação no papel da liderança. A liderança passa a representar um ¿retorno ao carisma¿, personalizando as estruturas de legitimação (Courpasson, 2000a).
