Resumo: In this article, the author - who is a professor of organization and methods (O&M) at the Fundação Getulio Vargas' EBAP - tries to cover some of the deficiencies existing in the Portuguese literature on the subject, that is, the lack of a practical directive with a view to administrative analysis of formal organizations. With such a goal in mind, he initially stresses critical areas to be detected by the administrative analyst, in which concerns the organizational framework, then suggesting several routes, capable to guiding the practical action of the O&M analyst, especially the novices.

Na qualidade de professor e praticante de O&M há mais de 20 anos, temos tido ocasião de verificar que, tanto na maioria dos cursos ministrados em escolas de administração como em livros especializados sobre a matéria, uns e outros, professores e autores, raramente mostram como deve ser feita a análise das estruturas formais das organizações do ponto de vista prático, isto é, à luz das técnicas de O&M.
