The hierarchical and vertically integrated company that, for so long, has characterized the Fordist form of production and management has become more and more inadequate for todais business environment. New organizational forms proliferate in several industries, and the network is their ma in characteristic. As the most important landmark of the new information era,the organizational networks are based on partnership and collaboration, and demand a drastic change of managerial behavior. This paper analyzes some relevant aspects of organizational networks and the factors that caused their·emergence. The paper emphasizes the important role played in this change by the new information and communication technologies, the characteristics of inter-organizational and intra-organizational networks, and the main challenges of network management, pointing out possible cases of failure, as well as stressing the importance of the human role.
