Resumo: This paper describes the process of institutional interchange and conflict negotiation conducted by various stakeholders of the cocoa agriindustrial chain during the implementation of the Cocoa Bioplant Institute, in Ilhéus, state of Bahia, Brazil. The cocoa bioplant is the first unit in the world to propagate special genetic material for cocoa culture in a industrial scale. It also figures as a strategic piece for the competitive restructuring of the cocoa agriindustrial chain in Bahia. To explain this trajectory, the authors constructed a theoretical scheme based on the new institutionalist approachand the concept of agriindustrial chains as an “orchestration of multiple interests”, centered on its political-institutional dimension.

To explain this trajectory, the authors constructed a theoretical scheme based on the new institutionalist approachand the concept of agriindustrial chains as an “orchestration of multiple interests”, centered on its political-institutional dimension.Este artigo descreve o processo de orquestração de interesses, mediação política e aprendizado socialmente construído entre os atores estratégicos do complexo agroindustrial do cacau, ao longo da concepção e da implementação do Instituto Biofábrica de Cacau, em Ilhéus, Bahia. Primeira unidade no mundo destinada à produção, em escala industrial, de genótipos (clones) de cacaueiros selecionados, a biofábrica é uma interorganização que constitui peça fundamental da última versão do Programa de Recuperação da Lavoura Cacaueira Baiana e da própria reestruturação produtiva da cadeia do cacau. O seu processo de constituição caracterizou-se pela necessidade de construção de arranjos de negociação e administração de conflitos de interesses entre os múltiplos atores desse complexo agroindustrial, portadores de racionalidades heterogêneas, porém interdependentes.
