Determinants of success in the application of agile methods in project management

Resumo: Purpose: To identify the critical factors that influence the success of agile project management. Originality/Relevance: The outcome was the development of a research model with high technical quality, incorporating observable items derived from existing literature and logically grouped based on empirical data affinity. Methodology: Data collection was carried out using electronic survey. The analysis included 475 projects managed using various agile methodologies, encompassing software products, non-software products, and services across organizations of diverse sizes, sectors, and industries. Results: It was found that factors inherent to the characteristics of the project and the organizational environment are more critical. The factors “Participants’ Dedication”, “Participants’ Experience” and “Project and Organizational Environment” are positively associated with the Success of Agile Projects. Conclusion: Overall, the study provided evidence that the human factor plays a critical role in achieving desired performance levels within organizations.

Originalidade/Relevância: O resultado foi a obtenção de um modelo de pesquisa com indícios de qualidade técnica, oriundo da fusão de itens observáveis consagrados na literatura, com a lógica de seus agrupamentos determinada pela afinidade dos dados empíricos. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma coleta de dados com questionários eletrônicos do tipo survey. Foram aplicadas técnicas de Análise Fatorial Exploratória, Confirmatória e de Modelagem de Equações Estruturais. A análise contemplou 475 projetos gerenciados com várias abordagens ágeis, desenvolvendo produtos de software, não-software e serviços, em organizações de diferentes portes, setores e atividades. Resultados: Foi verificado que fatores inerentes às características do projeto e do ambiente organizacional são mais críticos. Os fatores “Dedicação dos Participantes”, “Experiência dos Participantes” e “Projeto e Ambiente Organizacional” estão associados positivamente ao Sucesso dos Projetos Ágeis.
