Brazilian peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi) as a possible source of human health products

Resumo: The plant species Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi is native to Brazil and, popularly, almost every part of the plant is used for medicinal purposes, including the fruit, known as “pink pepper” or “Brazilian pepper”. In this sense, studies that point to the development of technological innovation associated with the production and use of S. terebinthifolius for health are importan. The objective of this study was to carry out a prospection of health products based on S. terebinthifolius Raddi and/or pink pepper, through literature research and patent database searches. The results reveal proposals for pharmaceutical formulations based on S. terebinthifolius and its fruits for use in human health. Patent applications have shown that S. terebinthifolius has many uses within the context of formulating products for human health worldwide, but that in the Brazilian context, there is no investment in technological innovation associated with the production and use of S. terebinthifolius. This research proposes pink pepper as one more candidate to produce pharmaceutical ingredients through the Research and Development of new innovative herbal products, stimulating the Brazilian technology park and the innovation chain in medicines from biodiversity.

Neste sentido, estudos que apontem ao desenvolvimento de inovação tecnológica associada à produção e uso de S. terebinthifolius para saúde são importantes. O objetivo desse estudo foi realizar uma prospecção de produtos para saúde a base de S. terebinthifolius Raddi e/ou de pimenta rosa, através de pesquisa na literatura e buscas em bancos de dados de patentes.
