Scientific evidence for the popular use of fruits and medicinal plants used by cancer patients in Piauí

There are several products that are used to treat the most varied types of cancer, these products are from industrialized medicines to use of medicinal plants. The present work seeks to identify if there is scientific evidence for the use of fruits and medicinal plants as pharmacological aid in the treatment of cancer carriers of any nature residing in the state of Piauí. Deals with a review of descriptive and exploratory literature based on the popular practice of using some fruits and medicinal plants as well as in the scientific literature of sites such: SciElo, Science Direct, Web of Science, PubMed BVS (Brazilian virtual library). The terms used were as follows: Neoplasia or Cancer, medicinal plants. Noni, red beet, soursop, aloe, saffron, açaí and cashew were analyzed. It has been identified that in all of them there are chemical properties that justify their use in the treatment of cancer, in some situations directly on cancer cells and in other situations in certain symptoms such as reduction of oxidative stress, pain, inflammation, among others. It is concluded that the products analyzed have scientific evidence for use in cancer patients, however their use should be in moderation and always with medical follow-up.
