Resumo: The objective of this study was to evaluate in vitro the antimicrobial action of four conventional intracanal medications and the natural substance (20% propolis tincture) as an alternative intracanal medication, against bacterial strains Enterococcus faecalis and Kocuria Rhizophila. The agar diffusion test was performed in duplicate for the following substances: calcium hydroxide, 2% chlorhexidine solution, camphoric paramonochlorophenol (PMCC), Otosporin®, and 20% propolis tincture. The inhibition halos were measured after 24 h, then the average between the two plates was made, and then the value found was subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc test (Tukey HSD). There was a statistically significant difference between all tested substances (p <0.05), except for calcium hydroxide and Otosporin® against the E. faecalis strain. The propolis tincture showed a good antimicrobial action, with results superior to calcium hydroxide, Otosporin® and PMCC against E. faecalis e; to calcium hydroxide against K. rhizophila. However, the most effective substance for both bacteria was the 2% chlorhexidine solution. It is concluded that propolis is a viable alternative as an intracanal medication, because it has satisfactory antibacterial action, is natural, non-toxic, biocompatible, and of low cost.

It is concluded that propolis is a viable alternative as an intracanal medication, because it has satisfactory antibacterial action, is natural, non-toxic, biocompatible, and of low cost.O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar in vitro a ação antimicrobiana de quatro medicações intracanal convencionais e a substância natural (tintura de própolis a 20%) como uma medicação intracanal alternativa, frente às cepas bacterianas Enterococcus faecalis e Kocuria Rhizophila.
