The impact of bioprospecting for the discovery of new drugs

Resumo: | The use of natural products in the development of new drugs has been widely discussed in the last 50 years. In this sense, the biodiversity of several countries significantly influences the discovery of new bioactive molecules, such as the chemotherapeutic agents of natural origin vinblastine and Taxol. Bioprospecting, which refers to the collection of new plant species to be tested in screening models and subsequently in analytical techniques, generates several molecules whose activities may configure potential biological actions in the treatment of different diseases, such as cancer. Under this perspective, the present work aims to relate the screening models High Content Screening, High Throughput Screening and Virtual Screening, in the discovery of new molecules. In addition, comparatively analyzing institutions, legislations and financial investments in the study and development of natural’s products according to their biodiversity. It was concluded that, although there are efforts for the use of biodiversity in the advancement of science, they still have several difficulties, especially Brazil, which has not presented an expressive program or contract in bioprospecting as the other nations mentioned. |

Nesse sentido, a biodiversidade de diversos países influencia de maneira significativa na descoberta de novas moléculas bioativas, como os quimioterápicos de origem natural vimblastina e taxol. A bioprospecção, que se refere à coleta de novas espécies vegetais para serem testadas em modelos de screening e, posteriormente, em técnicas analíticas, gera diversas moléculas cujas atividades podem configurar potenciais ações biológicas no tratamento de diferentes enfermidades, como o câncer. Sob essa perspectiva, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo relacionar os modelos de screening, como o High Content Screening, o High Throughput Screening e a Triagem Virtual, na descoberta de novas moléculas. Além de analisar comparativamente instituições, legislações e os investimentos financeiros de diferentes países, no estudo e no desenvolvimento de novos compostos de origem naturais.
