Resumo: Species of the genus Ocimum, also known as basil, are used to prevent various diseases, such as culinary and flavoring spices. In this study, three species of this genus were evaluated for chemical composition and sun protection factor (SPF) of essential oils extracted from the leaves of Ocimum basilicum L., Ocimum gratissimum L. and Ocimum kilimandscharicum Güerke. The extraction of essential oils was carried out by means of hydrodistillation, the identification of the substances was carried out by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and the SPF by spectrophotometry. According to the results, it was possible to identify sixteen substances in O. basilisicum, with linalool (64.15%) as the majority. Twenty-two substances were identified in O. gratissimum, with eugenol (30.92%) being the majority substance, and for the species O. kilimandscharicum, twenty-three substances were identified, of which methyl E-cinnamate (42.20%) presented greater abundance. The highest SPF value was 2.28 for O. killimandscharicum, justifying its incorporation in multifunctional formulations.

Centro de Inovação em Biodiversidade e Saúde - Farmanguinhos/Fiocruz2022-06-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersiontext/xmlapplication/pdftext/htmlhttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/117710.32712/2446-4775.2022.1177Revista Fitos; Vol. 16 No. 2 (2022); 181-191Revista Fitos; Vol. 16 Núm. 2 (2022); 181-191Revista Fitos; v. 16 n. 2 (2022); 181-1912446-47751808-9569reponame:Revista Fitosinstname:Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ)instacron:FIOCRUZporhttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/1177/1091https://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/1177/976https://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/article/view/1177/977Copyright (c) 2022 Revista Fitosinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessCavalcante, Nathalie BarbosaPiva, Raul CremoneziCastro, Thiago Luis Aguayo deCardoso, Claudia Andrea Lima2022-07-15T12:45:29Zoai:ojs.revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br:article/1177Revistahttps://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/PUBhttp://revistafitos.far.fiocruz.br/index.php/revista-fitos/oairevistafitos@far.fiocruz.br || eugenio.telles@far.fiocruz.br2446-47752446-4775opendoar:2022-07-15T12:45:29Revista Fitos - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ)false
