Summary: The main goal of virtual reality is to create three-dimensional environments that users can explore and manipulate with the feeling of being immersed in realistic simulations. VR systems are mainly characterized by a high degree of realism in their simulation of real world experiences or even fictitious situations. Medicine and healthcare are benefiting from VR, especially the collaborative virtual environments for teaching various procedures that enable distance education as well as collaboration for remote users. In the context of health education, these systems exhibit some advantages over traditional teaching methods: lower cost for training students, decreased use of guinea pigs and anatomical specimens in laboratories and the possibility of more interactive teaching. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present and discuss the studies that have been performed to highlight the ongoing challenges related to the use of VR in the field of health education.

Therefore, the aim of this study is to present and discuss the studies that have been performed to highlight the ongoing challenges related to the use of VR in the field of health education.A Realidade Virtual tem como ideia principal o uso de ambientes tridimensionais nos quais os usuários podem explorar e interagir sentindo-se imersos em simulações realistas. Sistemas de RV são caracterizados principalmente pelo elevado grau de realismo que oferecem ao simular experiências do mundo real ou mesmo situações fictícias. A Medicina e a área da saúde estão sendo beneficiadas com o advento da RV, especialmente pelos Ambientes Virtuais Colaborativos, que são voltados ao ensino e treinamento de procedimentos diversos, possibilitando a educação a distância e práticas colaborativas entre usuários remotos. No contexto da educação em saúde, esses sistemas apresentam algumas vantagens em relação aos métodos tradicionais de ensino, tais como: a redução de custo na formação de estudantes, a redução do uso de cobaias e peças anatômicas em práticas de laboratório, e a possibilidade de um ensino mais interativo.
