Resumo: This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the technical complaints reported regarding hospital medical equipment to a Sentinel Hospital Network health risk management team. It analyzed documents at a university hospital within the network’s National Health Surveillance System, reviewing a total of 160 technical complaints submitted in the year 2012. The device with the greatest frequency of technical complaints reported was the infusion set (21% of all complaints). Most reports (92%) related to structural flaws in the equipment. In 2% of cases, quality deviations were related to the occurrence of adverse events. Nurses submitted the vast majority of the reports (87%) and July was the month with the greatest number of complaints (19% of the total). In view of the importance of technical complaints associated with medical equipment, it is believed that the development of similar studies will provide managers with adequate analysis of such occurrences, thereby helping them to raise awareness of good safety practices among their employees. A technical complaint system is especially crucial because early detection of quality deviations in medical and hospital supplies is known to minimize the incidence of adverse events.
