Prevention of bloodstream infection related to central venous catheter: An integrative review

Objective: To analyze the national and international scientific production on the adoption of bundles to prevent bloodstream infection related to central venous catheters in adult intensive care unit. Methods: An integrative literature review of studies published from 2011 to 2014 was conducted in the databases Pubmed, CINAHL and Science Direct. Results: 11 articles were found. In all of them the principal measures adopted before catheter insertion were: skin antisepsis, use of maximum barrier precaution, preference by the subclavian vein, previous hand hygiene, and education and training of health professionals. Conclusions: The bundles are being used in clinical practice as strategies to reduce infections, but infections from catheter-related bloodstream continue to occur alarmingly and with great impact on healthcare. Strategies pointing to subsidies for improving clinical practice and patient safety should therefore be encouraged, particularly those focused on the critical period of catheters insertion and maintenance.
