Cushings syndrome: a narrative review

Cushing's syndrome is a set of signs and symptoms caused by excessive exposure to endogenous or exogenous corticosteroids, which can vary between primary and secondary. The most common cause is idiopathic, due to the unknown or indiscriminate use of corticosteroids, such as self-medication.  OBJECTIVES: This is a narrative review of articles on the pathophysiology of Cushing's syndrome, to simplify knowledge and identify the syndrome and its clinical repercussions, even in hidden causes. In addition to promoting an update of the subject. METHODS: This is a scientific review based on an active search on digital platforms such as Clinical Key, Scielo and Pubmed, in order to gather knowledge about the pathophysiology of the syndrome and present its current prevalence. CONCLUSION: In view of the data researched with this work, it is relevant to highlight the possible consequences of self-medication and prolonged use of glucocorticoids. In addition, it is important to systematize the various signs and symptoms caused by SC for greater efficiency in anamnesis and physical examination, in order to carry out the correct diagnosis and treatment.
