Resumo: Adipose tissue is a special type of connective tissue that long ago was aware of his duties as fat storage and cushioning. But recently has been discovering a new side of this fabric, this is proving the endocrine scenario as a multifunctional organ produces and secretes numerous bioactive peptides and proteins, called adipokines. This emerging concept sets for important adipose tissue endocrine function, maintaining close communication with other organs and organ systems. Having an important role in the pathophysiology of several diseases such as obesity, insulin resistant diabetes, inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome, among others. It is believed that with greater elucidation of the physiological functions of adipokines, there is a possibility of broadening the understanding mechanisms associated with pathologies, and may represent important advance in the prevention and therapeutics of diseases.
