Antidepressants in primary care in the municipality of Itaocara, RJ: user and dispensing characteristics

Depression is a common mental illness that affects more than 350 million people worldwide. It is a worrying public health disorder that is not limited to gender, age, region, or socioeconomic class. This study aims to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate the antidepressants dispensed in the basic pharmacy of the municipality of Itaocara-RJ and the characteristics of users of this service. After consulting the Fiorilli Integrated Health System, a database of the municipal pharmacy, we identified 762 patients who received antidepressants in the months from October to December 2021, mostly aged over 50 years. A prevalence of female users was found, and the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors was the most used. Among the drugs, amitriptyline, although belonging to the tricyclic class, is the most dispensed drug, and the administration of the drugs is done in a single daily dose or twice a day.
