Resumo: Individuals who underestimate their actual weight tend to have lower health care behaviors, as well as seek specialist assistance less frequently. Health care professionals play an important role in the management of obesity, because measuring body weight makes it possible to identify and treat people with inadequate weight, who do not always recognize themselves as such. Of the total of 325 participants, 57.5% were overweight, and 48.3% of them had incorrect self-assessment of weight. Female gender (p 0.037), habit of weighing themselves more frequently outside the appointment (p 0.001), and history of having been previously weighed in a medical appointment (p 0.015), received a diet supervised by a specialized professional (p 0.02) or previous anti-obesity drug treatment (p 0.046) correlated with a greater chance of getting the self-assessment of weight right. On the other hand, 34.8% of participants reported that they had never been weighed in outpatient medical appointments, only 54.6% of overweight patients were referred for specialized follow-up, and 24% of obese patients were prescribed medication. Nevertheless, 33.2% of those with overweight underestimated their real body weight. Our results confirm the need for the adoption of measures to increase the perception of obesity as a public health problem, both by patients and health professionals.

Our results confirm the need for the adoption of measures to increase the perception of obesity as a public health problem, both by patients and health professionals.
