ADVANCE DIRECTIVES: THE NEED TO IMPROVE ITS KNOWLEDGE SINCE GRADUATION

INTRODUCTION: Advance Directives (DAV) are becoming increasingly present due to the epidemiological transition in Brazil and its consequent high prevalence of palliative care. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to demonstrate, to teachers and students, the importance of knowledge of DAV due to its extreme relevance for patient well-being, palliative care and terminality, and also as a means of legal defense for professionals. METHODS: This is a systematic review, without meta-analysis, using databases: Bireme, Medline, SciELO and Medscape, selecting articles from 2001 to 2016, that relate advance directives, lack of knowledge of health professionals and this consequences. RESULTS: Several studies reveal a significant lack of knowledge of health professionals about this topic and about the CFM 1995/2012 resolution. CONCLUSION: It is a fact that the introduction of DAV in graduate programs is necessary, as there is minimal knowledge about this topic, which impairs the doctor-patient relationship, autonomy and safety professional activity.
