Resumo: | Introduction: The umbilical cord tissue containing hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells with multipotent differentiation potential related to a variety of therapeutic approaches. At present, cord blood is a major source of stem cells for bone marrow transplant. Objectives: To describe the main normal morphological characteristics of umbilical cord and its functional aspects. Methods: A literature review of research was conducted in the Virtual Health Library database The descriptive study was made from images obtained by photographs of histological slides of human umbilical cord belonging to the Pathological Anatomy Laboratory collection of the Hospital Alvaro School. Alvim. The work presented all the requirements and is in accordance with Resolution No. 466/12 and new norms Platform Brazil, with the opinion of number 1427809. Results: The umbilical cord is composed of the umbilical vessels: two arteries and one vein, and a gelatinous substance called Wharton jelly. The mesenchymal stem cells can be found in the endothelium and subendothelium the umbilical vein. Conclusions: This study sought to contribute to further deepening of knowledge regarding normal morphology the umbilical cord and its functional aspects. Also, secured a greater understanding of the subject and its peculiarities allowing better understand the microscopic view of the umbilical cord with a possible view of their tissue structures. The theme is of great importance due to therapeutic purposes, such as using stem cells to treat multiple hematologic diseases. |

The theme is of great importance due to therapeutic purposes, such as using stem cells to treat multiple hematologic diseases.
