Resumo: Currently, society faces difficulties to conciliate rampant development for modern life good production and environment preservation. One important issueis the inadequate destination of fluorescent bulbs. Because these bulbs contain heavy metalsin their composition, their inappropriate disposal represent risks to the environment and public health. This work aimed toevaluate handling, conditioning, disposal and final destination of fluorescent lamps (LF), as well as, the development of environmental responsibility in the employees responsible for these tasks. The methodology consisted of a literature review and data collection survey through the application of a questionnaire to the employees of a maintenance service provider of a Financial Institution in the Metropolitan area of the cities of São Paulo, Jundiaí and Campinas and the Baixada Santista region of the state of São Paulo. The highest loss rate of LFs occurs in theirinstallation and removal, due to inadequate handling, causing occupational and environmental hazards. In order totackle this issue, maintenance vehicles were adapted with horizontal platforms, providing an adequate working stand to manipulate LFs. Additionally, the authors developed a best practice handbook, describing the most effective ways to install and dispose of fluorescent bulbs, thusreducing accidents. Lately, the Financial Institution showed concern regarding the disposal of fluorescent bulbs. An emerging need for proven documents was also observed, testifying the correct final destination of the LFs by sellers. This demonstrates the importance of raising employee awareness of the hazards that inappropriate LF disposal can cause to the environment.

This demonstrates the importance of raising employee awareness of the hazards that inappropriate LF disposal can cause to the environment.
