The environmental management system is the control of the environmental impacts of a company's activities. Behavioral changes in society, new technologies and concern for the environment are some of the explanations for the implementation or implementation of environmental management systems, which initially aimed at only good operational practices of companies. Therefore, the objective of the article was to identify the difficulties and opportunities that companies in the industry, commerce and services segment of the city of Garibaldi, located in the Serra Gaúcha, perceive in relation to the habilitation of an environmental management system. Therefore, the research has a quantitative approach, through the application of a questionnaire directed to 215 companies associated with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Garibaldi (CIC), being 65 industries, 63 trades and 87 services. For the analysis of the data, we used the technique of descriptive statistics. Among the main results obtained, it was observed that 188 companies have an environmental license, that is, they operate with some system or management model that indicates and monitors the environmental impacts caused by their processes, products or services. It was verified that the entrepreneurs seek to unite the conservation of the environment with the economic growth of their organizations. Finally, it was identified that there are those companies that meet the required parameters and requirements, seeking to focus on preventive actions, and others that, without altering their technological standard, seek to prevent and reduce environmental damage, as well as optimize your processes.
