Discussions on sustainability have been developed in the last 30 years. The same is true of its concept. This article seeks to discuss the concept of sustainability, through a conceptual/bibliographical review, pointing to convergences and divergences. For this, we will adopt a systemic thinking approach to indicate ways of dealing with the problem, especially in the field of agriculture and agroecology. The discussions about the concept demonstrate how the construction of a sustainable development paradigm requires more practical and evaluative actions, and present a normative character, since the advance in the discursive-theoretical field has been around abstract aspects that can make its feasibility more difficult. At any rate, therefore, it should be emphasized that a direction to a more holistic and therefore systemic perspective can be considered a gain, as well as the elaboration of evaluation instruments based on systemic thinking and that lead us towards the implementation of the principles discussed throughout the paper.
