Alternative nutritional intervention for the anemia control in children and mothers

Nutritional anemia is one of the biggest problems of the world’s public health. It affect near to 2 billion of people, being women and children more affected. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an alternative nutritional intervention in anemia control. It was done by adding supplementary iron, ferrous bisglycinate, on children habitual meals, aged between 2 and 4 years, as well as on their mothers. This was a longitudinal placebo-blind comparative study and the sample was 125 mothers and 125 children from 125 volunteer families assisted the Family Health Strategy (ESF) in Diamantina city – MG. They were separated in four groups of mothers and children: 2 Intervention (GI) and 2 Control Groups (GC). The GC received a placebo supplementation. Anemia diagnostic was taken by measuring hemoglobin concentration after three months of intervention on all groups. It was observed that the solution of iron supplement or placebo were restricted only to children between 2 and 4 years.
